Stephen Flint and David Hodgson of Liverpool University's department of earth and ocean sciences are helping a consortium of 11 of the world's leading oil companies to accurately identify oil reservoirs. In a £1 million project, the pair are studying ancient deep-sea channels, now exposed above sea level in the Karoo area of South Africa, to help the industry predict which underwater channels are likely to produce oil.
