* Brunel University School of Arts has appointed Richard Barrett and Christopher Fox research professors at the school's newly launched Centre for Contemporary Music Practice. Professor Fox has taught music at Huddersfield University since 1994; Professor Barrett taught electronic composition and improvisation at the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague between 1996 and 2001.

* Ken Judge has been appointed head of the School for Health at Bath University. He is currently professor of health policy at Glasgow University.

* Stephen Hagen , director of the Mercia Institute of Enterprise at Warwick University, has been appointed director of the Centre for Research Innovation and Graduate Studies at the University of the West of England.

* The Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils has appointed two members for three years: Richard Catlow , director of the Davy Faraday Research Laboratory and head of chemistry at University College London; Dewi Lewis , vice-president (physics), General Electric HealthCare, and visiting professor at Liverpool University. The council also announced that Andrew Harrison , chair in chemistry at Edinburgh University, has been appointed UK associate director at the Institut Laue-Langevin.
