Sussex reconsiders

Sussex University is to consider further the future of chemistry at the institution after an internal review proposed keeping the subject and investing more in it.

Sussex vice-chancellor Alasdair Smith said: "Academic plans in life sciences must provide a sound and sustainable basis for building excellence in the school. I very much want us to find an approach that maintains chemistry programmes at Sussex."

The university was criticised by MPs last week for its handling of proposals to shut chemistry.
