ULSTER

Pól Ó Dochartaigh , newly appointed to the German chair at Ulster University, is out to destroy the "two World Wars and one World Cup" syndrome that has long dogged his subject in Britain.

As the first professor of German in Northern Ireland since the mid-1980s, Professor n Dochartaigh sees a key part of his new role as promoting German studies. He believes this is important in improving the skills base and fostering multiculturalism in the region.

"We've got to get beyond 'two World Wars and one World Cup' syndrome," he said. "The German contribution to European culture has been absolutely massive."

Professor Ó Dochartaigh, who chairs the Royal Irish Academy committee for modern language, literary and cultural studies and is on the German research assessment exercise panel, joined UU as a lecturer in 1994. He became senior lecturer in 2001.

IN

David Kretzmer , Bruce Wayne professor of international law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and visiting professor of law at Tufts University, Massachusetts, will take up a chair in law in UU's Transitional Justice Institute.

Don MacRaild , professor of history at Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand, has been appointed to a professorship in history.

Gerard O'Hare , a businessman, has been appointed chairman of the University of Ulster Foundation, which undertakes fundraising for UU.

OUT

Billy Gilmore , reader in biomedical science, has accepted a chair at Manchester Metropolitan University and becomes head of MMU's School of Biology, Chemistry and Health Science.
