Brussels, 12 Jun 2006
During an official visit to the US from 7 to 9 June, European Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik addressed a gathering of more than 300 European researchers in Washington DC, organised by ERA-link, a major network of European Researchers, scientists and scholars in the US. ERA-Link was created last year by the European Commission in collaboration with the embassies of EU countries in the US, and already has over 3,000 members.
ERA-Link aims to help expatriate European researchers keep in touch with one another, and with the research community and institutions in the EU. It provides information about research in Europe, EU research policy and funding opportunities.
Speaking before the meeting, Commissioner Potocnik said: 'At a time when Europe is striving to become a more dynamic knowledge-based society, it cannot afford to turn its back to its thousands of expatriate researchers. They represent a patrimony of talent, skills and expertise that Europe wants to nurture.'
