Portsmouth builds cultural-industrial faculty

Government support for the creative and cultural industries and growing student interest in related disciplines have prompted Portsmouth University to establish a new faculty to capitalise on this burgeoning field.

Architecture, the creative arts, film media, art and design, and creative technologies, have all been pulled together under the creative and cultural industries faculty umbrella.

The university is advertising in this week's Times Higher two posts in the faculty, which swung into operation only this month. More jobs could follow in the near future.

Simon Claridge, the faculty dean, said: "This is a very exciting development. We are looking to expand as and when opportunities come along, bringing in talented staff into our very broad creative and cultural industries field."

Portsmouth is looking for a professor in film and TV studies with a strong research record and a senior lecturer in media studies who is likely to have experience of working in the industry.

Dr Claridge said that staff in the faculty would need to be switched on to the importance of developing employability skills and entrepreneurship among students. The faculty will be supported by Portsmouth's new Centre for Enterprise.

Canterbury Christ Church University is also advertising in this week's paper for a lecturer in media and cultural studies.

Michael Wright, the vice-chancellor, said media studies at Canterbury had developed out of the 25-year-old department of film, radio and TV.

"We are a well-established player in this field, but media and cultural studies is still a rapidly growing area," he said.
