In the feature “Spies like us”, Anthony Glees (19 April) makes some telling points about the relation between academia and the security services.

Academics will always be attracted by the possibility of playing even bit parts in the “endless game”; but hopefully they will not be expected to wear the uniform of the professional, as exemplified by the two large hats shown in the photograph of Nikita Khrushchev and Nikolai Bulganin that illustrates the review of The Price of Aid: The Economic Cold War in India in the same issue.
