World University Rankings 2019 by subject: arts and humanities
The 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings’ table for arts and humanities subjects uses the same rigorous and balanced range of 13 performance indicators as the overall World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields.
It highlights the universities that are leading across art, performing arts, design, languages, literature, linguistics, history, philosophy, theology, architecture and archaeology subjects.
This year, we have made a small adjustment to the eligibility criterion for academic staff in the subject tables, which has resulted in more universities being eligible for inclusion.
The 2019 arts and humanities ranking has also expanded to include 506 universities, up from 401 last year.

Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology take the top two places in the table for the second year in a row, while the University of California, Berkeley joins the top 10 at ninth, up from 11th.
Europe has also increased its prominence in the ranking, with three continental European universities featuring in the top 20 for the first time under the current methodology (since 2011).
But several flagship universities in Asia have declined, most notably Peking University, which falls from 17th to joint 23rd. Leading institutions in Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea have also moved backwards.
