Necessary languages

Learning a foreign language will become compulsory for 7 to 14-year-olds, Alan Johnson, the Education Secretary, has announced. The move follows a recommendation made by Lord Dearing in his report on languages, which was published this week. An extra £3 million will go to university schemes to encourage more young people to study for language degrees.
