A Times Higher Education reporter has been named higher education journalist of the year at a prestigious awards ceremony.
Deputy news editor John Morgan topped the Outstanding Higher Education Journalism category at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations’ annual Education Journalism Awards.
His winning submission explored how US universities were responding to the challenges they face in the era of Donald Trump’s presidency, covering the issues of extremist speakers on campus, environmental erosion in the Gulf of Mexico and the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Two other THE journalists were on the five-strong shortlist for the category: deputy features and opinions editor Jack Grove, and reporter David Matthews.
John Gill, THE editor, described the award as “deserved recognition for a truly agenda-setting journalist”.
“These pieces are illustrative of John’s approach, providing serious, unflinching journalistic scrutiny to issues that really matter,” Mr Gill said. “His journalism contributes a great deal to the health and vitality of higher education.”
Mr Grove was also nominated for the Outstanding National Education Journalism prize, while his colleague Rachael Pells made the shortlist in the Most Promising Newcomer to Education Journalism category.
