A new exhibition on the history of theatre has opened at the British Library. The Golden Generation: New Light on British Theatre is the culmination of a five-year collaboration between the University of Sheffield and the British Library funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The exhibition covers British theatre between the end of the Second World War and the abolition of theatre censorship in 1968 - a time of transformation that saw the emergence of influential playwrights including Harold Pinter. Project leader Dominic Shellard said the project had helped to re-evaluate the golden period of British theatre. "No one can ever now claim that British theatre 'began' on 8 May 1956 with the premiere of Look Back in Anger," he said. The show runs until 30 November.
