The board of governors at Leeds Metropolitan University have opted to change the institution's name to Leeds Carnegie University. The decision follows a consultation with almost 4,000 students, staff, alumni and partner organisations. More than 70 per cent favoured the change, which will take effect on 1 August next year. Board chairman Ninian Watt said the name would give the university a "distinctive identity", building on its "long and proud Carnegie heritage". Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie provided funds to establish the university's predecessor institution, the Carnegie Physical Training College, in 1933.
