An innovative research system that calculates the effect of tax and social-security benefits across Europe has been awarded EUR4.5 million (£4.03 million). The Euromod system, hosted by the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex, explores ways of tackling poverty and inequality. The funding will be used to upgrade its computer system and extend it to cover all of the enlarged European Union. The cash will also be spent on helping governments understand how Euromod can be used to measure the efficacy of their tax and benefit systems.
