From Jane Austen to Charles Dickens, adaptations of literary classics have always been a mainstay of cinema and television programming. Now a centre has been set up at De Montfort University to study such works. The Centre in Adaptations will bring together scholars from the university's English, film, media studies and drama departments, and will stage a series of talks next month. Screenwriter Andrew Davies - whose screen adaptations include Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Little Dorrit - is to be made a visiting professor. He said: "The centre is a most welcome development in an area that has been for so long under-represented in academic circles."
