Engineers at the University of Birmingham have been awarded £750,000 to research cleaner ways of using coal to produce energy. Since nuclear power is still underdeveloped, coal will continue to play an important role in the production of electricity. The team will be analysing supercritical coal-fired plant technology, which is more energy efficient and has lower carbon dioxide emissions than other techniques.
