A European Union grant worth EUR1.8 million (£1.5 million) has been awarded to a consortium of five European research institutions including the University of Bath to build a robot that will help researchers understand how fish can swim upstream. The group, led by the Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia, will look to biology to inspire the design of a swimming robot that can react to changes in current or flow. The robot could be used to film and study marine life close to the shore, an environment where conventional propeller-driven submersible robots have difficulty manoeuvring.
