A new, more environmentally friendly form of engine oil is being developed in a joint project between an institute in India and the University of Huddersfield. The project, which has won funding from the UK-India Education and Research Initiative, will link Huddersfield's automotive engineering and chemical and biological sciences research groups with scientists at the Indian Institute of Petroleum. They aim to produce additives for automotive engine oils based on synthetic minerals. By coating engine components and reducing friction, improved lubrication will reduce fuel consumption and extend the life of engines.
