Ethnic minorities, young adults and the poorly qualified are most likely to be out of work as a result of the recession, according to work at the University of Essex. Richard Berthoud, a researcher at Essex's Institute for Social and Economic Research, gathered statistics from earlier recessions to predict who would be worst affected this time. Using data from the General Household Survey, Professor Berthoud found that unemployment would affect Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, 20- to 24-year-olds and people with low qualifications particularly badly.
