A team of scientists led by Newcastle University has flown to Sumatra to investigate how technology can prepare vulnerable communities for the impact of devastating earthquakes. The group will use satellite photographs to assess the vulnerability of terrain to landslides during an earthquake. Sean Wilkinson, senior lecturer in structural engineering at Newcastle, said: "The aim is to compare this data to that which we collect on the ground. If it works, then it will help us to assess the vulnerability of slopes anywhere in the world."
