The end of the British Empire and its continuing impact is the focus of an international conference at the University of East Anglia this week. The event marks the 50th anniversary of Harold Macmillan's landmark "wind of change" speech in South Africa on the future of colonial rule. Scholars from around the world will consider the political, international and military aspects of decolonisation, as well as new cultural and social perspectives on the Empire's demise. It will also look at the role of Macmillan, whose speech as prime minister in 1960 helped to speed up the process of African independence.
