Four key barriers that stop children and young people reporting abuse have been identified in a new study. The research was carried out by Stan Tucker, dean of the School of Community and Professional Development at Newman University College, Birmingham. Following one-to-one interviews with more than 100 adults who experienced abuse as children or adolescents, Professor Tucker identified background and "baggage", family matters, reluctance and refusal, and personal relationships as the four circumstances most likely to prevent youngsters confiding in professionals about what is happening to them.
