Thousands of people have taken part in a mass fire drill at sea. The University of Greenwich's Fire Engineering Safety Group boarded the Royal Caribbean international cruise ship Jewel of the Seas to carry out the live drill, which involved more than 2,300 passengers. Once an evacuation alarm sounded, the response times of those on board were measured by 100 video cameras positioned by the research team across the ship. Passengers also wore specially developed infrared tracking tags throughout the exercise, which allowed researchers to reconstruct the exact paths they took as they made their way to the various assembly points on board.
