This week's First Impressions, the competition in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, comes from the work of a Dutch Jew who was expelled from his synagogue for his unorthodox views:
"By cause of itself I understand that whose essence involves existence, or that whose nature cannot be conceived except as existing."
The winner receives a £20 book token and the closing date is April 28.
