First impressions

This week's First Impressions, the competition in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, comes from an old Harrovian with dynastic tendencies: "An only son of prosperous parents is apt to be spoilt, especially in India."

The winner receives a Pounds 20 book token and the closing date is August 19.The winner of last week's competition, who identified Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, is Mrs L. Cherry of Torquay.
