Royal Society of Chemistry

The Harrison Memorial Prize has been awarded to Helen Fielding, a lecturer in the department of chemistry at King's College, London, for her contribution to the dynamics of highly excited atoms and molecules.

The British Academy

Rose Mary Crawshay Prize: Karina Williamson, department of English literature at the University of Edinburgh, for her edition of The Poetical Works of Christopher Smart.

London Mathematical Society

Polya Prize: John Hammersley, University of Oxford for his contribution to the development and application of probability theory.

Senior Whitehead Prize: John Coates, University of Cambridge, for his fundamental research in number theory and many contributions to mathematical life, both in the UK and internationally.

Junior Berwick Prize: H. Dugald Macpherson, University of Leeds, for his articles on model theory.

Junior Whitehead Prizes: Alexander Grigor'yan, Imperial College, London, for his contribution to the geometric theory of partial differential equations; Dominic Joyce, University of Oxford, for contributions to differential geometry; Brian Bowditch, University of Southampton, for his contribution to geometric group theory and hyperbolic geometry.

Honorary membership: Peter Lax, professor at the Courant Institute, New York in recognition of his contributions to the theory of partial differential equations, functional analysis and computational applied mathematics.

The Wellcome Institute

Ian McConnell, recently appointed professor of veterinary science at the University of Cambridge, was awarded the Wellcome Trust Medal in recognition of his work on fundamental immunology, particularly in the area of mechanisms of immunity and immunopathology in slow virus-induced immune deficiency disorders in domestic animals.
