Michael Davies, geotechnical engineer and founder of the geotechnical centrifuge research centre at the University of Wales, Cardiff, has been appointed professor of civil engineering.

Emeritus professorships have been conferred upon: Frank Fahy, ISVR; Harry Lee, renal medicine; Stewart Robertson, mathematics; Ralph Scurlock, cryogenics; George Stevenson, immunochemistry.
