Latin America University Rankings 2023

The Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings lists the top universities in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

It is based on the same 13 rigorous performance indicators that underpin the THE World University Rankings, but the weightings have been recalibrated to reflect the characteristics of Latin America’s universities. We evaluate universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

The 2023 ranking includes 197 institutions across 15 countries, up from 13 countries last year.

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is number one for the fifth consecutive year, while Brazil’s universities of São Paulo and Campinas hold on to second and third place respectively. Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico jumps up one position to take the fourth spot.

Paraguay enters the ranking, with Universidad Nacional de Asunción in joint 82nd place. Similarly, Bolivia debuts with Universidad Mayor de San Simón, which ranks in the 126-150 band.

The highest new entry is University of Magallanes in Chile, at position 73.

Brazil is the most-represented country in the table, with 65 institutions; 14 of these feature in the top 20.

Colombia overtakes Chile as the second-most represented nation overall with 36 ranked universities, compared with 29 last year. Chile follows with 32 institutions, while Mexico has 24, Ecuador has 14 and Peru has nine.
