Classification: Academic Level A Salary package: $87,135 - $109,369 per annum plus 17% superannuation Term: Full time, Fixed term (up to 36 months) Position Description and Selection Criteria: PD and PEWER Level A Postdoctoral Fellow_Magnetismpostdoc.pdf The Position The Postdoctoral Fellow will work within the research group of Professor Naomi McClure-Griffiths and Dr Craig Anderson and focus on measuring the magnitude and structure magnetic fields in the nearby Universe using Faraday Rotation. The work will revolve around the ASKAP Polarisation Survey of the Universe’s Magnetism, POSSUM. This position will focus on using POSSUM Rotation Measures to probe the magnetoionic medium in the Magellanic Clouds, the circumgalactic medium of galaxies and/or nearby galaxy groups. This will also include some technical work to enable the delivery of the POSSUM survey data products. The Postdoctoral Fellow is also expected to contribute to other areas of academic activity including education and service (including outreach). The Postdoctoral Fellow may also be required to supervise or mentor less senior staff, and undertake leadership roles as applicable. The staff member will contribute cooperatively to the overall intellectual life of the School, College and University.    The Person An outstanding Postdoctoral Fellow in the areas of Faraday rotation and/or extragalactic magnetism. The candidate will have (or shortly obtain) a PhD in astronomy or a related area, with a strong track record of research in the field of Radio Polarimetry and/or Faraday Rotation as evidenced by cited publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, a record of developing and maintaining collaborations and by other measures such as awards, and invitations to present at prominent conferences etc. The candidate will have a track record of articulating and prosecuting innovative research in the field of astronomy and demonstrated ability to lead and work as part of a team. The Postdoctoral Fellow will use ASKAP POSSUM data with a view to publishing original and innovative results in international refereed journals, present research at academic seminars and at national and international conferences, and collaborate with other researchers at a national and/or international level.   The School The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics is a leading centre of Astronomy and Astronomical Instrumentation research in Australia. Classification: Academic Level A or B Salary Package: $87,135 - $134,507 per annum plus 17% superannuation Terms: Full-time, fixed term (up to 2 years) Position Description and Selection Criteria: Postdoctoral Fellow  Position overview  The Mathematical Sciences Institute is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral researcher at Level A or B. This position is funded by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery project awarded to Anthony Licata, Anand Deopurkar, and Asilata Bapat. The primary aim of the position is to carry out the research programme proposed for the Discovery project. This will be done in collaboration with the three chief investigators (named above) and a range of Australian and international collaborators. The project centres around the study of Bridgeland stability conditions on triangulated categories. The research aims to answer fundamental questions about the topology of the space of stability conditions, using a combination of techniques from representation theory, group theory, algebraic geometry, combinatorics, and other fields of mathematics. The level of this appointment, Academic Level A or B, will be determined by the appointee’s level of experience and expertise. Applicants are expected to have an outstanding record in research relative to opportunity, in a field directly relevant to the project mentioned above. The project The European Research Council project "Cultures of the Cryosphere" (CultCryo) investigates the cultural preconditions and consequences of the use of artificial cooling and freezing technologies in nutrition, health and reproduction, air conditioning, data processing, laboratory research and other everyday practices. This interdisciplinary research project aims to investigate the far-reaching socio-ecological effects of this energy-intensive planetary "cryosphere" and aims to identify possible alternatives for a more sustainable future of dealing with artificial cold. The CultCryo project consists of four international research groups at the Technical University of Darmstadt, the University of Paderborn, the University of Duisburg-Essen, and the Australian National University Canberra, as well as three participating project partners at the University of Hamburg, the University of Halle-Wittenberg and the Institute for Social-Ecological Research Frankfurt. It has an overarching budget of 10 Millon Euros.  Position overview Your tasks The successful candidate will focus on conducting ethnographic/social science research into the infrastructures, practices and cultural contexts of distributing cryopreserved biospecimens, and will study the technical, logistical and administrative requirements of cryobiological cold chains and their energy demand. The position will also involve the mapping of ‘cryobanks’ worldwide and cold chain networks for cryobanking services. The candidate will be expected to engage in scientific dissemination and publications of the project findings.   Your profile You will have a PhD in anthropology, STS, sociology, history, human geography or related discipline, and experience in ethnographic or qualitative social science fieldwork, with a focus on the social and ethical implications of applied cryotechnology. Experience in multi-sited research and working on interdisciplinary and/or international research projects is desirable. Our ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of publishing in high quality academic journals. The project language is English, thus very good language skills are required. While not mandatory for applying for this position, it will be considered desirable if applicants are also willing to familiarise with the German language.  College Overview The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) is the largest single College of six Colleges at ANU.
