Mount Kenya University was first established in 1996 as a computer outreach programme known as Thika Institute of Technology. It has since grown to be an institution with more than 40,000 students in including more than 500 from overseas and a network of campuses covering most of Kenya.

Landmarks in this progress include becoming the first private institution in Kenya to train pharmacists in 2005, the offer of degrees and diplomas in partnership with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology from 2006, becoming MKU in 2008 and opening a campus in Kigali, Rwanda in 2016.

The main campus remains at Thika, 30 miles north of Kenya’s capital Nairobi, home to the landmark Alumni Plaza towerblock and faculties including five medical disciplines. 

Kigali became an independent institution in 2025, but MKU retains campuses in Nairobi, Parklands, Nakuru, Eldoret, Meru and Kisii. Recent developments include the opening of the Maritime Academy at Malindi in 2024 and a Mombasa campus in 2025.

By uncovering night-time behavioural changes, you will help enable earlier detection and proactive prevention of health and welfare issues before these become serious. This cutting-edge work will help redefine how animal health and wellbeing are protected and improved.  This growing partnership between the University and Marwell Wildlife aims to connect people with nature, lead the charge in caring for the natural world, and support a thriving future for wildlife. The Role Based at Marwell Zoo (near Winchester, Hampshire), you will lead the design and delivery of an end-to-end, 24/7 animal welfare monitoring system. Your work will advance welfare science and support innovative, data-driven revenue streams that support Marwell’s long-term sustainability. You will bring experience in: Computer vision and machine learning: developing, training, evaluating, and deploying computer vision models. Data visualisation and analytics: turning complex data into actionable insights. Programming: strong skills in languages such as Python and C#. As a university assistant predoctoral (Doctoral student), you conduct a research project that complements research in our group and that ultimately will lead to a PhD degree. The primary objective of our research is to increase our understanding of the development and evolution of morphological traits of gnathostomes within a phylogenetic context. The Senior Research Officer (Targeted) will join a small but growing research team led by Associate Professor Miichael Mossman and Professor Donald McNeill. The successful applicant will work on a project jointly funded through an Australian Research Council Discovery Indigenous grant and University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning. The overall aim of this project is to report on the efficacy of the Architect's Accreditation Council of Australia National Standard of Competency for Architecture (NSCA). The culturally informed project aims to survey and workshop First Nations specific Performance Criteria of the NSCA with New South Wales based Indigenous communities, universities, practices, peak bodies and allied disciplines. The Senior Research Officer will help coordinate and undertake data collection, data interpretation, development of publications and organisation of annual symposiums. Experience in architecture and the built environment in relation to Country and First Nations Communities and Culture is critical to advancing the processes and outcomes of this research project. They will be expected to apply and develop their expertise in conducting research and interactive activities.
