Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg was established in 1622.

It was founded by Paris Lodron, prince-archbishop of Salzburg. It was closed in 1810 and not re-opened for another 152 years.

There is no single city centre campus, but 26 separate buildings in the Altstadt, some of genuine historic and/or architectural note.The Unipark campus in the Nonntal district, is where the faculties of modern languages, culture and social science can be found. There is a further Salzburg campus at Freisaal and annexes further afield in Vienna, Krems and Linz.

Students can study a range of courses including Catholic theology, cultural science, law, business and economics, natural and life sciences and digital and analytical science.

Specialised research centres focus on allergy cancers, cognitive neuroscience and the European union.
