Tashkent Medical Academy is recognised as "one of the leading medical institutes in the Republic of Uzbekistan".
The university originally started out as a faculty for medicine within Turkestan State University which opened in Tashkent in 1919 to provide training in basic medicine, pharmacology and hygiene.
In 1931 it became the Tashkent State Medical University. It was then divided into two parts in 1990 and took on its current form and name with the merger of two earlier institutions in 2005.
While still predominantly based in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent, it also has campuses in in Urgench (since 1992), Ferghana (since 1998) and Termez (since 2018). One of the main tasks of the Termez branch is the training of medical personnel who meet modern requirements and develop advanced technologies in medicine.
