Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, commonly referred to as TUFS, is a national specialist research university located in Fuchu, Tokyo.
The university can trace its history back to 1873 when it was established as the Institute for Research of Foreign Documents. It then became the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in 1899.
The university primarily offers courses in foreign languages, international studies and cultural studies. The university offers students the opportunity to major in 26 languages including Chinese, Indonesian, Hindi, French and Czech among others.
TUFS is considered one of the most selective universities in Japan. The university is also well-known for its research output and quality.
It also has academic partnerships with universities in 35 countries across the world including University of Indonesia, National University of Malaysia, Seoul National University, National University of Laos, National University of Singapore, University of Delhi, Cairo University and many others.
Tokyo University of Foreign Studies has a large campus with a wide range of amenities like libraries, a gymnasium, cafeteria, sports fields and various international residence halls. The school also regularly organises several co-curricular and extra-curricular activities every year for students. Gaigosai, the annual school festival, which normally takes place at the end of November every year, is one the major cultural attractions at the university.
It has produced a range of notable alumni including novelist Futabetai Shimei, poet Chūya Nakahara and actress Yūko Nakamura.
