The University of California, San Diego, commonly abbreviated as UCSD, is a public higher education institution, placed in the heart of the community of La Jolla, San Diego, United States. It was established in 1960 with donations from the city and the American aerospace corporation General Dynamics.
The institution is part of the state-wide University of California system, alongside other 9 semi-autonomous public institutions. UCSD is among the US Public Ivy colleges, whose objective is to provide students with the same quality of education as can be found in Ivy League’s private colleges.
As an important contributor in research activities, the university comprises of 6 undergraduate schools. It also features 3 graduate colleges, 2 medical centers and the famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which is the largest geological and marine science institute in the world.
A notable feature of the university is its numerous research institutes which receive considerable public funding. This investment has led to nearly 30,000 newly created jobs, notable profits generated from the sale of licensed technology and the launch of over 600 new companies operated by UCSD affiliates.
To maximize the level of collaboration and stimulate discussion, students and faculty members inhabit the same residential areas, part of the main university campus which is built over a 1500 acre plot of land. Students can also enjoy visiting some of UCSD’s recreational facilities, which include a eucalyptus forest, aquarium, and museum.
Student life at UCSD can be exciting for music lovers, who can attend November’s Hallabaloo music festival, which has featured acts such as Macklemore and Snoop Dogg in the past. The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki, invites applications for the position of UNIVERSITY TEACHER IN MOLECULAR AND INTEGRATIVE BIOSCIENCES (ESPECIALLY NEUROBIOLOGY) This fixed position from 1.8.2026 (or as agreed) – 31.5.2030 is based in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Biosciences, which is one of the three Departments in the Faculty and located on the Viikki Campus. Tasks Teaching and teaching-related tasks account for the majority (70-90%)of the annual working time. The primary focus will be on contributing to the curriculum of the Master’s Programme in Neuroscience — an international, multilingual programme that attracts both national and international students. In addition, the selected candidate will be involved in bachelor level teaching and teaching-related tasks. Teaching responsibilities will include fundamental topics in neurobiology from molecular and cellular to systems level, as well as quantitative analysis methods and examples of modern approaches in fundamental research. The university teacher selected for the position will be the responsible teacher on selected courses, teach on courses coordinated by other teachers and to assist professors and university lecturers with course preparation and management. Key duties also include student guidance, bachelor’s and master’s thesis supervision and evaluation as well as participation in collaboration with the faculty’s degree programmes. The candidate is encouraged to integrate into Department’s research activities. We expect the candidate to be able to work collaboratively, contributing to joint teaching initiatives and to foster a learning environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving. Selection criteria According to the University of Helsinki's administrative regulations, applicants must have a relevant higher education degree and teaching experience. When assessing applicants’ qualifications, emphasis will be placed on proficiency and teaching experience in molecular and integrative biosciences, in particular that of relevance for the curriculum of the Master’s Programme in Neuroscience, demonstrated pedagogical competence, supervision of bachelor and master’s theses, and ability to advance the use of interactive and student-centered education methods. Expertise in blended learning approaches that incorporate modern digital tools are regarded as an asset. The successful candidate should have good knowledge of cutting-edge approaches for investigating neurobiological systems at different levels of organization and to be committed to excellence in research-based undergraduate education. Additional merits include a doctoral degree and other research experience, particularly in the field of neurobiology. Teaching skills The overall teaching skills of a university teacher must be at least at a good level. Applicants' teaching skills will be assessed in relation to the curriculum of the Master’s Programme in Neuroscience in the field of neurobiology. Applicants' teaching skills will be assessed using the faculty's assessment matrix and a teaching demonstration. Language skills The university requires that those holding teaching and research positions must be proficient in the language of instruction, which in this case is English. The research team is seeking a Research Fellow or Research Engineer with strong expertise in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and social science methodologies to lead the user research and policy development, as part of an interdisciplinary team investigating harmful user-generated content in virtual worlds as part of a national research initiative on Online Trust and Safety. The primary responsibility of this role is to investigate users’ experiences with harmful content in these virtual environments, review existing reporting guidelines on these platforms, and evaluate users’ responses to alternative mechanisms. The successful candidate will work with a diverse team of faculty members, engineers, and industry partners, including labs at the College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS) at NTU.
