How does it feel to win Counsellor of the Year – South Asia at the first ever Global Counsellor Awards?

Winning the first Counsellor of the Year – South Asia at the inaugural Global Counsellor Awards is truly an honour beyond words. It’s a validation of the dedication and passion counsellors have poured into their work, and it’s immensely humbling to be recognised on such a prestigious platform.

This award not only celebrates individual achievement but highlights the importance of counselling in schools to foster growth and well-being in our society.

Tell us about your career background and how you became a school counsellor.
My journey to becoming a school counsellor was led by my own challenges and struggles while trying to find a career path for myself. It became a journey filled with purpose and determination.

With a background in marine biology and a deep-rooted desire to make a positive impact on young minds, I pursued further education and training in counselling. My career path – from research at national institutes to university to schools – led me to various roles where I gained invaluable experience working with students, understanding their needs and providing guidance and support through challenges.

What is the counselling profession like in your region?
The counselling profession is evolving rapidly, driven by the growing recognition of the importance of career and university guidance in schools. There’s a strong emphasis on collaboration between schools, counsellors and the broader community to create a supportive environment for students.

While challenges exist, such as stigma surrounding inter-school competition (which school had the Ivy acceptances, great SAT/ACT scores etc), there is a concerted effort among school counsellors to break down barriers and promote open dialogue.

How can counsellors boost the profile of the profession within their region?
Counsellors must not only engage in advocacy and outreach efforts but actively participate in professional development activities, highlighting the impact of college guidance departments on student success. Counsellors should also foster partnerships with education stakeholders and the larger school community.

Contribute actively to the advancement of the field. By showcasing the value we bring to schools and communities, we can elevate the status of counselling and attract more resources and support.

What sort of trends are you seeing in counselling within your region?
In terms of trends, I’ve observed a growing interest among students in exploring international education opportunities, leading to an increase in applications to universities abroad. Many locations that were not on a student/parent’s radar are now showing up (Netherlands, Spain, France, Germany, Australia, even India).

Additionally, there’s a greater focus from the counselling community on holistic approaches to counselling, incorporating mindfulness practices and promoting “fit” rather than ranking or other not-so-relevant factors.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about joining the profession?
If you want to dive into a profession that is both challenging and rewarding, filled with unique stories where no two days are the same and has profound moments of impact, then this one’s for you.

It involves supporting students through pivotal times in their lives, guiding them as they navigate academic pressures, personal challenges and future aspirations. Each day presents new opportunities to be a source of strength and encouragement for students, helping them find their path and voice.

As a counsellor, you become an advocate for your students, ensuring their needs are met and their potential is recognised. Your work is dynamic and impactful. The relationships built and the trust earned from students and their families are testament to the vital role that you will play. It’s a career that demands dedication and compassion, but one that offers profound satisfaction in knowing you’ve made a meaningful difference in young lives.

What is your proudest moment in your career so far?
It’s difficult to pinpoint just one. Every day that presents a success story, no matter how small, fills me with immense pride and fulfillment.

However, if I were to choose, it would be the moments when I see students overcome obstacles, discover their strengths, embrace their potential and make better/smart choices, instead of choosing the obvious routes. These are the moments that reaffirm my passion for counselling and inspire me to continue striving for excellence.
