(Photograph) - Fifty years after the vanguard of West Indians arrived on the troopship Empire Windrush, Britain has its first black woman professor. Lola Young, professor of cultural studies at Middlesex University, says on page 17 this week that the acceptance of successful black men or women is always conditional. "It is OK to be rich/talented/attractive provided you do not rise too quickly, attract too much envy." With just 16 black British professors out of more than 7,000 there is not much danger of that.
