Protests took place across University of California campuses as students and faculty voiced their opposition to potentially savage budget cuts. The action follows escalating concerns over the state's $750 million (£472 million) budget shortfall. The UC system is the largest in the US, with 220,000 students and 170,000 faculty. A protester said: "The university is in danger of losing its Nobel prizewinning faculty, its diverse student body and its reputation for excellence."
