The international network of higher education institutions promoted by Banco Santander has acquired its first Welsh member. Cardiff University has signed an agreement of co-operation with Santander's UK subsidiary, Abbey National, which will fund opportunities for overseas research, study exchange scholarships, student enterprise and student volunteering. The university's Cardiff International Academy of Voice, which provides opera training, will also gain an annual bursary. Since 1996, Santander Universities' global division has channelled almost EUR500 million (£390 million) into higher education through agreements with 700 universities in Spain, Latin America, Portugal, Russia, China, the US and the UK.
