Amid all the talk of elitism, Oxford and Cambridge must be relieved that Prince William seems to have set his sights on Gordon Brown's alma mater. To gain his chosen place at Edinburgh University to read history of art, he will need at least three Bs at A level. Buckingham Palace has reportedly said that wherever he goes will depend "strictly on merit". How times change. His father made it to Cambridge with a B in history and C in French, while a C and two Ds were enough for Uncle Edward
