It would be "a tragedy" if colleges started to avoid recruiting difficult student groups in order to improve their standards indicators, Chris Hughes (below), chief executive of the Further Education Development Agency, has warned. In a speech to the North of England Equality Assurance conference last week, he referred to "tension" between widening participation and maintaining high standards.
