Figures may show (see page 7) that university librarians are better paid than their local authority counterparts, but even they cannot do justice to the awful lot of the local librarian, according to facts gleaned for this week's Library Resources Exhibition in Birmingham. A survey of Midlands librarians shows that the most defaced books ever returned were How to Raise and Train Your Puppy, which came back chewed to bits, and Where's Wally, in which Wally had been ringed on every page. By contrast, nobody has ever borrowed Mucus.
