Leicester University's genetic fingerprinting pioneer Sir Alec Jeffreys has been voted Leicestershire's "greatest Briton". Readers of the Leicester Mercury newspaper placed Sir Alec above football legend Gary Lineker, jet engine inventor Frank Whittle and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough. Sir Alec told the paper: "I can't believe I beat Gary Lineker. He's a wonderful guy."
