South African astronomers are over the moon about the government's approval of funding for a powerful new telescope, said Bob Stobie, director of the South African Astronomical Observatory. The Southern African Large Telescope will be ready early in the next millennium, he added, and would "guarantee the future of high-level astronomy in this country for at least the next 30 years".
