The Welsh Assembly has launched a consultation on a proposed science policy for Wales, which would focus on research and development in health, low-carbon energy systems, and economic and social renewal.
Assembly First Minister Rhodri Morgan said Wales needed to match specialist strengths in higher education with private sector strengths in the same or related fields.
