Robert Hawley, chairman of the Engineering Council, has been awarded the Order of Diplomatic Merit, Kwang-ha Medal (First Degree) by the Republic of Korea for his promotion of friendly ties between Korea and the United Kingdom.

Jurgen Strube, chairman of BASF Aktiengesellschaft, has been awarded the Society of Chemical Industry's 1999 Centenary Medal for his outstanding contribution to the international arena of modern business.

Gary Craig, professor of social policy at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside, has been elected president of the International Association for Community Development.

The Open University is to award honorary doctorates of the university to Robin Lingard, former director of the University of the Highlands and Islands Project, and the Very Reverend Alexander McDonald, broadcaster, former Moderator of the Church of Scotland and president of the Glasgow battalion of the Boys' Brigade.

Royal Holloway, University of London has awarded honorary fellowships to Janet Finch, sociologist and vice-chancellor of Keele University; Sarah Tyacke, first woman keeper of public records for the UK government and chief executive of the public record office of England and Wales; Patricia Brown, former undersecretary (economics) at the Treasury and a former member of the Royal Holloway council; and Barry Wintour, librarian of Royal Holloway for 19 years.
