David Arter , director of the Nordic policy studies centre at the University of Aberdeen, has been made a Knight First Class of the Order of the White Rose of Finland .

The University of Hull has awarded honorary degrees to: Stuart Burgess , former president of the Methodist Conference; Sir Peter Maxwell Davies , conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra; and Sir Barry Jackson , president of the Royal College of Surgeons.

The University of Leicester has awarded honorary degrees to: Susan Greenfield , director of the Royal Institution; and Bruce Smith , chairman of the Economic and Social Research Council.

Alex Hughes , of the University of Birmingham, has been awarded the R. H. Gapper Book Prize by the Society of French Studies .

Loughborough University professor David Kirk , has been awarded the International Olympic Committee 's president's prize.

Nick Offer , of the Scottish Agricultural College, has won the Roche National Livestock Nutrition Award .

The Institute of Physics has made honorary fellows of Nobel laureates Joseph Rotblat and Georges Charpak , and industrialist Cyril Hilsum .

The University of Derby has awarded honorary degrees to: actor Robert Lindsay ; journalist Bob Wilson ; publisher Glenda Bailey ; John Kirkland , chairman of Bowmer and Kirkland, and Christine King , vice-chancellor of Staffordshire University.

Ray Mace , former professor of Wolverhampton University, is to receive a doctorate in education from the Thai crown prince .
