International Society of Electrochemistry

Roge Parsons
, of the University of Southampton, is the first recipient of the society's Frumkin Memorial Medal for his 'outstanding contributions to many areas of fundamental electrochemistry both as an author and an editor.


University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies


An honorary fellowship was awarded to Mr Lee Seng Tee , FBA, philanthropist and businessman from Singapore, on Tuesday 13 February 2001.


University of Surrey

The university's Teaching and Learning Prize for 2000 has been presented to Lesley-Jane Reynolds , school of biomedical and life sciences. A certificate of special commendation was presented to David Povey .

The Leverhulme Trust

Philip Leverhulme Prizes have been awarded to two members of the staff at the University of Southampton: Nils Anderson , department of mathematics; and Andrew Roberts , school of ocean and earth sciences. The prizes are awarded in recognition of world-class achievement by young research scholars who have made substantial and original contributions to knowledge.


Society of Automotive Engineers

Des Winterbone
, professor in the department of mechanical engineering at the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology (UMIST) has been elected a fellow of the institute and will receive his award at the World Congress to be held in Detroit, March 2001.

Institute of Metal Finishing

Keith Dennis
, University of Aston was awarded the institute's Hothersall Memorial Medal at the annual general meeting. Dr Dennis is senior vice president of the institute, chair of the examination board and a member of the publication committee.


Cranfield University

The school of industrial and manufacturing science at Cranfield University has received a $2.75 million endowment to enhance work in the ultra-precision technologies covering nanoscience, nanotechnology, microsystems technology and ultra-precision engineering. The endowment has been bestowed by the McKeown family as a result of the technical and commercial success of one of the family in Silicon Valley, California. Pat McKeown FREng, now a Cranfield Emeritus Professor played a major role in leading Cranfield into its current world class position in high-precision engineering.


The Royal Society

Roscoe Medal : Chris Seward , University of Oxford (Jesus College and Dyson Perrins Laboratory). The medal was awarded for work which tackles common problems associated with the synthesis of complicated biological molecules.


International Gairdner Award

The award, in recognition of individual achievement in the field of medical science, will be presented to Alain Townsend , professor and head of the Cellular Immunology Group at the Weatherall Institute, he is a fellow of Linacre College, University of Oxford, at a reception in Toronto.


Biochemical Society

The Keilin Medal , the society's prize for research achievements into the set of proteins known as cytochromes, has been awarded to Stuart Ferguson , department of biochemistry, Univeristy of Oxford.
