V-cs' boss quits to head education department
The executive director of the Australian vice-chancellors’ committee, Stuart Hamilton, has quit to head the department of education, employment and training in Victoria. The department has a budget of  A$5.8 billion (£2.1 billion) with 3,000 schools, eight universities, 28 tertiary colleges and more than 60,000 employees.

Professor shot dead in laboratory
A 60-year-old chemistry professor has been bludgeoned to death while working at night in his laboratory at Padua University in Italy. The body, which has been tentatively identified as Luigi Pasimeni, was dragged to a nearby courtyard and burned.
