More than 200 European and national members of parliament have signed a petition, addressed to the Council and European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA) and European governments, urging them to launch the Galileo project as soon as possible.
'At a time when the European space sector is going through a severe economic crisis and when the war in Iraq partially 'requisitions' the GPS, it seems more than ever opportune that the participating governments strive to resolve their disagreements as soon as possible in order to respect the proposed timeframe,' reads a statement from the European Parliament.
An ESA meeting is expected to take place in the near future in order to resolve the remaining obstacles to the project.
