Police have arrested 37 people at Messina University as part of an investigation into Mafia penetration of the Sicilian university. Charges relate to corruption in medical exams, access to courses and arms, and drug trafficking. In 1998, a professor was shot dead, three bombs exploded on campus, the then rector resigned under suspicion of involvement with organised crime and a senior academic was arrested for Mafia complicity.
