Higher education college leaders have welcomed the news that the London Institute has been awarded a university title. The decision, announced by the government on Tuesday, "sets an important precedent for the creation of other specialist universities", said Patricia Ambrose, chief executive of the Standing Conference of Principals. Sir Michael Bichard, rector of the institute, said there would be wide consultation on its new identity, which would be unveiled next year.
